The Buzz on Pollen: Food for Bees (and Us!)
As bees buzz from flower to flower, they collect golden pollen grains in specialized “baskets” on their legs. This pollen is their primary food source, packed with protein and nutrients needed to raise young bees and maintain the hive’s health.
But the benefits of pollen don’t stop there. As bees travel, they pollinate flowers, enabling plants to produce fruits and seeds – including many we eat!
Did you know? Bee pollen is considered a superfood by some, containing vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. It’s even eaten by humans, often sprinkled on yogurt, blended into smoothies, or added to oatmeal for a nutritional boost!
The intricate relationship between bees and pollen is vital for our ecosystem. Next time you enjoy honey or a juicy fruit, remember to thank the hardworking bees and the golden dust they carry.
